The Ragan Art Academy was named for Anne Ragan, founding member of FOJAC, to support her dream of providing the highest quality visual arts education for youth. The program began in 1996, and is designed to create a unique opportunity for children 12 years of age and up.
The Ragan Art Academy is a two-year, sequential program consisting of six classes. Students learn all aspects of the visual arts. Emphasis is on traditional methods of artmaking, with drawing classes centered on the figure. Students develop their visual and perceptual skills, learn the techniques of drawing, design, painting and sculpture, and develop a portfolio of their own work which is suitable for submission to more advanced art programs. Many of our graduates go on to higher education in the arts. Of the thirty incoming visual arts students at LACHSA (Los Angeles County High School for the Arts) this fall, six are Ragan graduates.
Course curriculum conforms to California State Visual Arts/Performing Arts (VAPA) Standards for middle school. Each graduating class has a graduate exhibition, and each student receives a certificate of completion. Students are assisted with applications to the arts magnet schools and other high school art programs. For more information on course curriculum, click here.
Please note that students are not required to participate in the full two-year certificate program, and have the option of taking one course at a time. Applications are accepted year-round.
